Trauma is an emotional response to an event that a person finds highly stressful. Examples include being in a war zone, a natural disaster, an accident, or emotional or sexual abuse. Trauma can cause a wide range of emotional reactions that include flashbacks, strained relationships, unpredictable emotions, and even physical symptoms like headaches or nausea. Not everyone who experiences a stressful event will develop trauma, but we are here to help find the answers you are seeking for the care that you deserve.

Symptoms of Psychological Trauma:

Symptoms may include:
  • Confusion or difficulty concentrating
  • Anger, irritability and mood swings
  • Anxiety and fear
  • Guilt or shame
  • Self-blame
  • Withdrawing from others
  • Feeling sad or hopeless
  • Feeling disconnected or ‘numb’

Types:

There are three main types of Trauma: Acute, Chronic, or Complex
  • Acute trauma: Results from a single incident
  • Chronic trauma is repeated and prolonged such as domestic violence or abuse
  • Complex trauma is exposure to varied and multiple traumatic events, often of an invasive, and interpersonal nature

Treatment:

Several treatments can help people with trauma cope with their symptoms and improve their quality of life. Medications alone cannot cure trauma or PTSD, but they can help a person
manage symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances. Therapy is a first-line treatment for trauma. Ideally, you will work with a trauma-informed therapist who can
collaborate with your MHP care team for ultimate patient success. If you do not already have a therapist that you regularly visit with, MHP’s Case Management team would love to assist in
finding the right fit for you.
